Needle Painting The Mushroom Cap

-Color blending with needle painting occurs because the length of all the stitches is staggered - some are longer, some are shorter. (Note: multiple colors are shown in the diagram below for clarity, but you will mostly be needle painting each section all with the same color.)

-Straighter areas can have longer stitches, but when stitching around curves, shorten the lengths of all of your stitches.

-Use the #24 chenille needle to stitch the entire mushroom cap (unless otherwise indicated).

-It doesn’t matter if you stitch clockwise or counter-clockwise - just begin in one place and stitch around the shape of the cap.

-When you are stitching these parallel sections of color, you can add a few random stitches inside an adjacent section. Then, when stitching the section next to it, you can always move back over and make some random stitches in the previous area of stitching so you have a blended area of color between sections.

-Once the mushroom cap is stitched, use 3 strands of Ecru thread to satin stitch the area underneath the cap.

-Use 2 strands of DMC #704 and some straight stitches to add shading along the bottom/inside edge of the cap. (See the color diagram below.)

-Use 1 strand of DMC #3844 to make straight stitches radiating out from the stem under the cap.

-Use the milliners needle and 6 strands of Ecru thread for the French knots on the cap. Wrap the needle 1 time for the smallest knots, 2 times for the medium knots, and 3 times for the largest knots.

Stitching The Mushroom Stem And Ruffles

-Use 2 strands of thread with the #24 chenille needle to needle paint the stem just as you did for the cap.

-Then add in some straight stitches with 1 strand of either DMC #3844 (in the dark areas) or DMC #3846 (in the lighter areas).

-Create 3 cast-on stitches for the ruffles on the mushroom stem. For these cast-on stitches, place the small tube over the needle before making your wraps/loops to increase the width of each ruffle. (There is a complete tutorial for the cast-on stitch in Part Two.)

-Use  3 strands of Ecru thread for these cast-on stitches. First create a ruffle on one side of the stem, then make the ruffle on the other side of the stem, then center the 3rd ruffle so it will overlap the first two ruffles.

-Use 2 strands of thread to needle paint the band above the ruffles.
